3.0 Ceremony

By Riley Wang, rw163@uakron.edu

The 3.0 Ceremony is a special event at Akron Early College High School. Its purpose is to give

recognition to students who have a 3.0 GPA or above. The ceremony started with AECHS Principal, Mr. T. O’Neil, who gave a welcoming speech to the students and their families. Mr. O’Neil highlighted the work ethics of the students and the sacrifices they made to become the studious scholars they are today. The guest speaker of the night was Professor Stanley H. Smith, from the Department of Disaster Science & Emergency Services, University of Akron. Professor Smith talks about how we students need to have a plan to reach our goals, just like how cybersecurity engineers have a plan to identify threats to their systems. I thought the analogy was a great way to relate the skills we learned in school to the real world. After the speech, the students were called up to the stage by teachers to receive their award and were given either a shirt, a banner, or a lanyard. The whole experience was wonderful, and it was nice for the students to get recognition for the hard work they put in. Below are some insights I would like to share with you on how students in our school manage to achieve a 3.0 GPA or above.

How many hours do you spend studying each day?

I spent at least 5 hours a day studying and doing my homework. I babysit my nephew after school, so I have a limited amount of time to do my homework. I try my best to do my work at school or late in the night–Isabela Trejo

What are some study skills that help you achieve good grades?

For my psychology class, I study by taking the quizzes multiple times to memorize the material. The quizzes are useful because you can take them multiple times and some questions are similar to the test–Mehm Chen

How do you manage school with sports and extracurricular activities?

I manage school with sports by sacrificing time for one or the other. For example, if I have an extensive amount of homework, I would miss a practice or two to focus on school. On the other hand, if I have a game coming up, I would put my schoolwork aside and focus on the game–Cianna Robertson

How do you manage school with your personal life?

I struggle with balancing school with my personal life, and it is one area I would like to improve this year. One technique I found helpful is putting a set amount of time aside to relax and do the things I like. That way, I can avoid burnout from the stress of school–Hadicha Abduvalieva

What is the biggest challenge for you this year, and what are you going to do to overcome it?

The biggest challenge for me this year is procrastination. I planned to overcome this challenge by having better time management and organization. Also have good friends to keep me accountable for my school work–Joseph Doan
