APS' Building Plans

Earlier this month when I was doing my homework at the back table, a local news story my dad was watching caught my attention. A news reporter was standing in front of STEM high school talking about how Akron Public Schools would be shutting down some of its campuses. Images flashed on the screen of several Akron schools including my alma mater, Miller South. To say the Miller South building was in disarray would be an understatement. In addition to the lack of air conditioning, we also had the privilege of having ceiling tiles fall on our heads and literal closets for gifted classrooms. Miller South’s emphasis on the arts is really important and they deserve a building that isn’t falling apart at the seams.

But Miller South isn’t the only school that could be relocated. Akron Public Schools has released 3 potential plans including closing schools, redistricting, and building new schools and athletic facilities. Each plan differs slightly and the prices of the plans range from fifteen to one hundred and forty million dollars. The district says they will seek grants, federal stimulus money, and they are seeking a bond issue to pay for this plan. Although this plan is expensive, I believe it is a good thing. Kids deserve to have nice facilities that are conducive to learning. A person interviewed by News 5 Cleveland stated that “If the kids see that they’re in a dilapidated school or their school doesn’t get enough funding, they feel like they’re not worth it.” I have to agree with this person’s sentiment. Akron’s dilapidated buildings are far past due for an update. This shows that the district cares about their students and their learning environments.
