APS Superintendent Steps Down

Bielessann Ahmad

Her Resignation.

Monday, February 13, at the Akron Public Schools board meeting, superintendent Christine Fowler-Mack voluntarily stepped down from her position by vote. This will take action on March 4th. In the meantime, the current executive director of elementary education, Mary Outley will be in substitution until a replacement is found.

Why So Soon?

Fowler-Mack was almost two years into her three-year contract. Although nothing is confirmed, there are many obvious reasons that could've driven Fowler-Mack to resign. One such event is the almost occurring strike from the teachers union earlier this year over contract negotiations with educators and the community bringing importance to student misbehavior and safety incidents.

Her Impact.

Fowler-Mack has made major improvements in the education system. Such as majorly contributing to the increase in graduation rate for the CMSD (Cleveland Metropolitan School District) by 22.4% by creating a blueprint for reinventing public education in the city. She also closed the achievement gap between Cleveland’s Hispanic and African-American students and their peers statewide. Neither would be possible with such integrity and diligence without Christine Fowler-Mack.
