As winter sports come to a close, we’d like to feature our AECHS senior boys on the Ellet Boys Basketball team: Trevor Ingham, Timothy Brown, and Chase Merring. All three of them grew up and played sports together. Timothy said, “We all kind of played growing up and we started playing together in 5th grade on a travel team together.” For Trevor, he grew up loving sports and being around them as his family are full of athletics, so since he could walk he shot mini basketballs in a mini hoop, not fully playing organized basketball till 5th grade as Timothy said. By now the three of them have played basketball together for over eight years. Their positions in basketball are similar but at the same time different, all three are shooting guards. Trevor and Chase are both point guards as well; however, Trevor normally plays shooting guard and Timothy is a small forward. Unfortunately, they have never won a City Series Championship for basketball, but their freshmen year Ellet were runners-up. No crazy achievements like shooting 1,000 points or having 1,000 assists were made, although Trevor got an honorable mention last year as a Junior. As seniors, they had their Senior Night on February 14th or Valentine’s Day. A favorite memory Trevor shared was getting to play his final year with the friends he grew up playing with. Trevor says, “ It’s crazy to think I’ve been playing with Tj and Chase since we were in elementary school and now we are getting to finish our senior year together, it’s pretty special.” The memory Timothy shared was when they played Canton Central Catholic this year and all three of them played a pretty amazing game. Being a student-athlete is not easy, especially being one from AEC. The way Trevor managed his schoolwork while being an athlete is by prioritizing what is important first. He makes sure to always keep his grades up while also making it to practice. Sometimes he spends a little extra time studying so he can get everything he needs done. Many people might have different opinions on being a student-athlete but Trevor said it wasn’t too hard managing both, as for Timothy I think it’s the same. Timothy does most of his work at school and then goes to practice, whatever he couldn’t get finished at school he would just do it at home after practice; he studies after practice before he goes to bed. Some advice from TImothy and Trevor for those who might be interested in basketball is, “My advice would be to go out and try it and don't be scared. Give everything you got because you don't know what could happen to you in the future,” says Timothy. Trevor says, “My advice would be just to go try out, have fun, and be yourself while you play. It’s hard for younger kids to not try and act like Steph Curry or Lebron James since they watch them on TV in the NBA lol, but high school coaches don’t want that. They want someone who hustles and is coachable. So if you’re a younger kid who’s thinking about playing, go for it and as long as you do your best that’s all that matters no matter what the outcome is.” The three of them don’t only do basketball, but they also do Baseball as well for their spring sport. Be on the lookout for another story on them coming spring!
