At Akron Early College, we have a small yet influential population of Hispanic students. Sometimes, we don’t recognize the backgrounds and cultures of these students. Many people, in my experience, have been unaware of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month, although not celebrated by as many Americans due to their lack of its existence, should be brought to the light. Doing this will help bring the school’s community closer together as well as make our Hispanic population feel appreciated.

So what is Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. These specific days were chosen to correspond with many Latin American countries’ independence days from Spain, such as Costa Rica, El Savador, and Guatemala. We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the influence that Hispanic Americans have left on our history, culture, and achievements. Despite it now being a full month, it was originally only a week-long celebration. It was finally changed in 1988 by President Reagan due to his recognition of the importance of the USA’s Hispanic citizens.
