Holiday Recipes

By Adelyne Carter asc122@uakron.edu

Winter break is right around the corner! This is an exciting time when you get to be home to relax and enjoy time with your family. Since you get to spend so much time at home, it’s a great opportunity to try out some new recipes! So, these are a couple of my family’s favorites that are simple and easy to make.

Christmas Cut Out Sugar Cookies From the Kitchen of Aunt Al

Ingredients

-1 Cup of Softened Butter

-1 Cup of Granulated Sugar

-1 Egg

-1 Tablespoon of Vanilla Extract

-2 Teaspoons Baking Powder

-3 Cups of All Purpose Flour

Directions

1.Pre-Heat oven to 350 Degrees

2. Mix Sugar and Butter until completely combined (If using a mixer, a couple of minutes on medium-high)

3. Add the Vanilla and Eggs to the mixture, and stir until light and fluffy

4. Add Baking Powder and mix

5. Add Flour one cup at a time, stirring until just incorporated

6. Roll out dough on a floured surface and cut out cookies

7. Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes

*For frosting, combine powdered sugar and milk until desired consistency is reached. Then add a splash of vanilla and a pinch of salt. Now you are ready to decorate your cookies!

Every year my cousins and I get together and have a cookie day. It seems like we always make a million cookies and decorate them horribly. The recipe above is the recipe we always use for this cookie day. I hope you enjoy the cookies my family has every year.

Holiday Punch From The Kitchen of Grandma Dyson

-2 large cans of Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate

-1 large can of Frozen Lemonade Concentrate

-1 Package of Cherry Kool-Aid

Dircetion

1.Mix the frozen juices, and add water according to juice directions

2. Make the Kool-Aid according to directions

3.Mix the frozen juices and Kool-Aid, serve in a large punch bowl and enjoy!

My Great-Grandma Dyson would make this punch every year for Christmas Eve. You can add a ginger-ale or sprite to make it carbonated or enjoy it as is.

Baked Sausage Pinwheels From the Kitchen of Mom

-1 lb. Jimmy Dean Mild Ground Sausage (or your preferred brand)

-1 oz block of Cream Cheese

-2 tsp. Dry Ground Mustard

-1 tsp. Dried Dill

-1 pkg. Full Sheet Crescent Dough

1.Cook ground sausage in a skillet, breaking it up while cooking, until browned. Drain off excess grease.

2.Add cream cheese and stir until melted. Sprinkle dry mustard and dill over, and mix together.

3.Unroll crescent sheet onto a large piece of saran wrap. Spread the sausage/cream cheese mixture across crescent dough.

4.With the dough rectangle facing you horizontally, begin to roll it up evenly.

5.Once you have rolled it, wrap saran wrap around it tightly and refrigerate for a couple of hours, or even overnight.

6.When ready to bake, Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove roll from the refrigerator, and slice across about ½” to ¾” wide sections to make the pinwheel.

7. Lay pinwheels flat on a greased cookie sheet, a few inches apart. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for a couple of minutes, and enjoy!

My mom makes this every Christmas Eve for Breakfast. They sound a little weird at first, but they taste so good! Wishing you all happy holidays and a relaxing winter break!
