Bree Matthews is struggling with the death of her mother when she travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to a residential program for high school students at a university. There, she witnesses a magical demon that threatens to change the course of her life on her first night there. Bree finds herself thrown into a secret society of people called ‘Legendborn’. As war brews between the Legendborn and the demons, Bree has to decide how far she will actually go to figure out the truth about her mother’s death and where she came from.

Throughout Legendborn, Tracy Deonn brings the characters from the stories of Camelot to life in creative and unique ways. From King Aurthor to the knights of the round table to Merlin, Deonn connects these characters with stunning ease to world that mimics our very own. I loved this book because it did not get lost in the past and the legends found there. In addition to Camelot, it also explored many issues in the world today and presented them from the perspective of a very relatable character. Bree, although she is immersed in a world of magic, is just a teenaged girl trying to survive in a world without the guidance of her mom. She is trying to put the pieces of her broken world back together and she just wants a place to call home and take a break. Bree is a multi-faceted character that is written with such vivid detail where she feels like a person both inside and out of the book.

Another amazing thing about this book is the way that Deonn writes. It’s captivating. It has a way of pulling you in that makes you forget you’re reading. The words transform into the world that she imagined and, as you continue to read, you feel as if you are truly a part of it.

Tracy Deonn wrote a novel that was not only entertaining but also thought provoking. As she mixes her amazing talent and creative ideas with nuanced issues of the world such as racism and dealing with traumatic experiences, she creates an amazing book that sparked the attention of readers everywhere.

If you are interested in this book, also check out the sequel that was just released earlier this year: Bloodmarked. I haven’t gotten around to reading the whole book yet, but from what I have read it has just as much, or more, potential than Legendborn and is an amazing way to continue with Bree on her journey through this new world.
