On February 5th, The Mon community around the world will celebrate the 76th Mon National Day central ceremony. It's been celebrated every year since 1947, the year that the Burma Independence Act was proposed. Mon national day is known to be based on a celebration from all the way back from the early first millennium (573 A.D.), at the same time as one of the Mon kingdoms, Hongsawatoi. It’s celebrated on the first waning of the moon on the Mon lunar calendar.
It’s celebrated internationally by the Mon communities around the world. The preparation starts weeks before to create and teach choreography for the children to perform. They usually find a venue with a stage. Some people volunteer to sing, and sometimes they'll invite people from other southeast asian groups to dance. There are people who sell or sew the costumes for the dancers. The dancers wear the traditional white shirts and red longyi. They prepare the food early the morning before the event. The staple food is sticky rice and people bring in food for the event.
