Oscars Recap

The Oscars, or the Academy Awards, had their annual ceremony on March 12th of 2023. Starting on May 16th of 1929, this was the Oscar’s 94th anniversary. The Oscars are a ceremonial event intended to nominate and award groups, films, and individuals for their work within a certain film/the film industry. The Oscars are orchestrated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Winners are determined by 9,500 out of the 10,000 members of the Academy.

Two of the most prestigious awards at the Oscars would be “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” award. The Best Actor award was gifted to Brendan Fraser. To little dismay, much of social media believed that this award was well deserved. Brendan Fraser is a Canadian-American actor who most recently starred in a 2022 film, “The Whale.” The Whale follows a school teacher, Charlie, who is played by Brendan Fraser, who disconnects from society and struggles with his relationship with food within his home. Charlie makes anguished attempts to form a better relationship with his daughter as his health becomes increasingly fatal. Brendan Fraser, a heartthrob in the 90s and early 2000s, gained a large amount of weight within recent years, which deteriorated his mental health. Him, being such a genuine actor, had his many fans concerned for his well-being, and proud that his work was recognized by such a prestigious organization.

Michelle Yeoh, a Malaysian actress, was the fourth ever POC woman and the first ever Asian person to win best actress. Michelle Yeoh won the Best Actress award for her lead role in the movie “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The movie is led by Evelyn Wang, played by Michelle Yeoh, who reaches out to alternate versions of herself within other universes in order to restrict a greater existence from demolishing the many universes. Michelle Yeoh, tearing up in her speech, proudly said “Ladies, don’t let anybody tell you you are past your prime. Never give up.” This quote, seemingly increasingly relevant to her, seeing that she is a 60 year old woman who has always (focusing on her age) received a degree of detestment online. That being said, Michelle Yeoh has aged flawlessly and continues to perform flawlessly in her career.

In regards to films, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won the Oscar for “Best Costume Design.” Similar to its first film “Black Panther” that also won best costume design in 2018. Avatar: Way of the Water won the “Best Visual Effects” award. Even so, I believe that Avatar: Way of the Water should have won “Best Cinematography” and “Best Film Editing” as well. The Oscars are a reputable event that have marked a path for many aspiring actors, actresses, filmmakers, and production professionals over the years. I can eagerly recommend that each reader tunes into next year’s event.
