Quantumania Review

Marleena Banks, mb403@uakron.edu

I went to see Ant-Man: Quantumania on February 20th and 21st. Ant-Man has always been one of my favorite superheroes because he’s so down-to-earth. MCU’s version of Scott Lang didn’t come from riches, he didn’t have a Vibranium shield, King of a hidden country, a trained assassin, or even a gamma powered beast when he gets angry. He’s just an ex-felon working side jobs like at Baskin Robbins trying to make a living for himself and his daughter, Cassie. He’s a huge fan of Captain America, which we saw in Captain America: Civil War in 2016.

Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp were both really good movies. The Point of Views in Ant-Man of him flying on Ants, training in the grass and underground withants were really cool. In AMATW. We not onl

y got to see Scott do his thing as Ant-Man but also Hope Van Dyne following in her parents footsteps. Their dynamic in the movie was spot on and a fan favorite. Now, Quant

aumania was an okay movie. I’m glad we got to explore more of the Quantum Realm after Janet came back, we got an introduction to Kang and even got to see both Cassie and Scott in their giant form. The movie felt too much like it was introducing a whole bunch of characters and their stories instead of a third installment of the Ant-Man trilogy. It didn’t feel fair that most of the movie was pushing for Cassie getting her place in Phase 5 and 6 instead of Scott passing on his mantle. Kang’s story was perfect, we love a villain backstory and then a sudden plot twist where Janet actually helped him get to his place in the Quantum Realm. I feel as if Scott didn’t get his due time in the rising action and climax in the movie. Not only that, MODOK’s character was just pushed into the plot randomly. He didn’t even survive the entire movie. He had a lot of potential for them to introduce more villains like him.

At the end, Hank Pym is the one who technically defeats Kang. When they were originally sucked into the quantum realm the ants had gone with that. Pym was constantly getting homing signals from his ea piece throughout the movie and turns out the ants had survived and super-sized creating their own armed civilization. The armored ants overpowered Kang and its forces, ultimately defeating him. One of the most powerful Kang’s in the multiverse getting overpowered by ants is so silly to me. We don’t technically see Kang die but judging by The Lok

i Effect, he ended up coming back when they were going back to our realm. It made for a good ending scene watching one last anxiety inducing scene. For a couple seconds I thought Scott was about to die in his last movie. WOuld’ve made for a big surprise. I’m excited to see how they fit Cassie into the Ying Avengers in the next two phases. She has a lot of potential with Hawkeye’s Kate Bishop.
