““OMG BARBERTON HAS A SNOW DAY!!!!!”.”

By Addy Carter, AEC News Staff

It was a Wednesday morning that seemed like any other. I woke up, dragged myself out of bed, quickly ate my breakfast, brushed my teeth, washed my face, and then made my way into my bedroom to get dressed. I was dreading going to my 7:30 gym class at STEM, so I quickly checked my phone and saw I had a text from someone that goes to Barberton high school. She wrote, “OMG BARBERTON HAS A SNOW DAY!!!!!” I excitedly checked to see if APS did as well, and to my surprise they did. I ran into the living room and told my mom. I was so happy that I got to skip my gym class. I lounged around for a couple of minutes, but something didn’t feel right. I knew that the universe didn’t want me to be this happy so I emailed Mr. O’Neil just to confirm that I wouldn’t have to go to gym at STEM. He emailed me back a couple of minutes later and my heart dropped. It turns out I was wrong and had 3 minutes to get dressed, do my hair, and get out the door. I frantically rushed out the door and got to STEM with a minute to spare, just to see that less than half of our class was there. Because of this, we had a free day; all of that stress for nothing.

I had free days in all of my high school classes because of how few people were there. Then my college class got canceled. So I woke up early, got ready, and drove through the snow just to sit through 7 hours of study halls. I am not here to argue that we shouldn’t go to our college classes, but it seems a little bit ridiculous to make us come to our high school classes when APS has a snow day. We essentially had a snow day but had to drive on dangerous roads and walk on icy sidewalks instead of staying safe in our houses. And again, I think we should absolutely go to our college classes if they are still meeting. But to the Superintendent, the school board, or whoever has the power to change this, it is simply absurd to expect students to brave the elements to sit in study halls while the rest of the district’s students are safe at home.
