What is the Willow Project?

The Willow Project, a massive drilling project led by ConocoPhillips'. The project is intended to take place in the northern Alaskan slopes in the national petroleum reserve which belongs to the federal government. The location of the intended drilling voyage bears around 600 million barrels of oil. Seeing the large amount of oil this project will seize to see the market for years.

You may be wondering who ConocoPhillips is, well ConocoPhillips is a Houston based company that has been drilling oil in Alaska for years. ConocoPhillips is the only company that operates in Alaska’s national petroleum reserve. Now your next thought may be when will the retrieval process of the oil begin, well the Biden administration has given the thumbs up to allow construction to begin. Though it is still unknown exactly when this will occur due to the large amount of legal challenges. Environmental law groups are currently in the works of preventing the company from proceeding through complaints which may lead to the project being faced with an injunction to oppose them from continuing on.

The exact legal arguments that they are going up against are complaints related to protecting resources on the public Alaskan lands additionally interjecting steps to limit global warming carbon pollution, which is what this project will eventually lead to. The reason the fight against this project is so important is because estimates show the project will create enough oil to unleash 9.2 million metric tons of planet warming carbon pollution per year which is equal to adding 2 million powered cars to the road. This project not only puts Alaska's environment and wildlife in danger but it also puts our whole world at risk.
