Which Halloween Movies Made the Top 10 Must Watch List?

With the Halloween season approaching, Letterboxd released their official fan favorite Top 10 list of must-watch movies for the season with one rule: each movie must somehow incorporate October 31st.


#10. The Shining (Rated R) - A family of three takes a trip to watch over a Hotel in Colorado, as Jack Torrance is in hopes of finding some writing material. As his young son Danny begins to receive visions the longer they reside at the hotel, the family uncovers the dark secrets of the property and Jack begins an unsuspecting homicidal rampage.


#9. The Guest (Rated R) - A soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family claiming to be a deaf friend of their son who brutally died in action as a soldier himself. After the soldier is openly welcomed in the home, a series of ‘accidental’ tragic deaths ensue.


#8. Scream (Rated R) - A year after her mother’s tragic passing, Sydney Prescott and the town of Woodsboro are being terrorized by a heinous killer in a ghost mask known as “Ghost Face.” The killer begins to target exclusively Sydney and her friends through using scary movie references and makes Sydney the main focus of his deadly game.


#7. Hocus Pocus - After 300 years of isolation, the Sanderson Sisters are accidentally resurrected in Salem on Halloween night by a group of teenagers. The Sisters begin a spree of mischief and form a plan to remain permanently resurrected before the clock strikes midnight. Three kids must stop this rampage and put an end to the witchery once and for all.


#6. The Exorcist (Rated R) - After a seemingly innocent 12 year old girl begins to speak in languages unfamiliar to her, and in other voices, doctors say this is beyond their abilities. As people begin to be fatally injured and dead, the mother of the girl comes to the conclusion her daughter is possessed by a demonic entity. The fate of her daughter lies entirely in the hands of two priests who hope to expel this demonic entity from the girl in the form of an exorcism.


#5. E.T. - A foreign alien becomes stranded on earth and is befriended by a young boy named Elliot. The young boy takes the newfound alien into his home and decides he must keep it’s existence a secret. E.T. falls ill and the boy and his little sister recognizes a governmental intervention is upon them. They must cure the alien and keep him a secret without exposing the entity.


#4. Trick ‘r Treat (Rated R) - Four stories are interwoven and ultimately connected throughout Halloween night. A high school principal doubles as a homicidal murderer, A college student believes she found love, a group of mischievous teenagers pull an unsuspecting prank, and a bitter elderly receives an uninvited guest at his doorstep.


#3. Donnie Darko (Rated R) - After narrowly escaping a fatal incident, Donnie Darko is overwhelmed with visions of an oddly large bunny rabbit who manipulates him into committing a series of crimes which terrorize and consume his day-to- day life.


#2. The Nightmare Before Christmas - Jack Skellington; the king of Halloween town, grows tired of scaring humans every October 31st and kidnaps Santa Claus in hopes of finding a new holiday to participate in. Jack makes an effort to become Santa Claus in hopes of delivering ghoulish gifts to kids all over the world on Christmas day. But as Christmas Day approaches, Jack’s plans are hindered by his rag-doll love interest Sally.


#1. Halloween (Rated R) - Fifteen years after brutally murdering his sister on Halloween Night, Michael Myers returns to the town of Haddonfield to continue his legacy of terror, determined to avenge his past and continue his murderous spree.
